Vatican City is a landlocked city sovereign state, and the world's smallest recognized country in both population and area. It only has 800 people officially living in the city, and it's only 110 acres in size! Its territory includes a walled enclave in the city of Rome, Italy. Vatican City was established in 1929 by the Lateran Treaty, and it was signed by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Gasparri and by Prime Minister Benito Mussolini.
Vatican City is an absolute and elective monarchy, ruled by the Bishop of Rome, the Pope. The current Pope is Benedict XVI, previously known as Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger of Germany. The highest state functionaries are all Catholic Clergymen of various nationalities.
Vatican City's climate is the same as Rome's; a temperate, Mediterranean climate with mild, rainy winters from September to mid-May, and hot, dry summers from May to August. In July 2007, Vatican decided to become the world's first carbon neutral state, by creating the Vatican Climate Forest in Hungary.
Vatican officially pursued a position of neutrality during WWII, when Pope Pius XII was ruling. Although the City of Rome was occupied by Germany from 1943, and by the Allies from 1944, Vatican City itself was not occupied. One of Pius's main diplomatic priorities was to prevent the bombing of Rome. So sensitive was his approach, that he protested even the dropping of pamphlets by the British over Rome, claiming the few that landed within Vatican City's limits were violating their neutrality. After American entry into the war, they protested such a bombing as well, fearing it may offend their Catholic recruits.
Vatican City's police force is provided by Switzerland, and they are called the Swiss Guard. All members of the Swiss Guard must be Catholic, unmarried men, between the ages of 19 and 30, who have had their basic training in the Swiss Army, and must be at least 5 feet 9 inches (175 cm) in height. The Swiss Guard is responsible for the safety of the Pope. The Corpo della Gendarmeria, also known as the Vigilanza, is responsible for public order, law enforcement, crowd and traffic control, and criminal investigations in Vatican City. The military defense of Vatican City is provided by the Italian armed forces.
